Refrigerant loss versus water leaks

Water dripping from an indoor unit is usually condensate from a blocked drain, not refrigerant. Refrigerant is a gas inside sealed pipework; when it leaks, you won't see a puddle. Instead, the system cools or refrigerates less and less, coils may ice up, and you might notice oily marks at joints.

Leak investigation and diagnosis

We check pressures to confirm the system is low on refrigerant, then search for the leak at joints, valves, coils and along the pipework using detection equipment. Some leaks are slow and hard to find, so we explain what we've checked and what we found.

Repair and refrigerant handling

Once found, a leak may be repaired by brazing a joint, replacing a fitting or flare, or replacing a leaking coil or component. Refrigerant handling is part of the job and is done by licensed technicians. Refrigerant work isn't a DIY task.

Testing and recommissioning

After the repair we pressure test to confirm the leak is sealed, evacuate the system to remove air and moisture, recharge it to the correct amount and run it to check performance.

Home and business systems

At home, a refrigerant leak usually shows up as a split or ducted system that gradually stops cooling. In a business, it might be a coolroom that can't hold temperature or a display fridge that keeps icing. FAQ

Common questions

More answers on our FAQ page.

How is a refrigerant leak different from a water leak?

Water leaks come from the condensate drain and show as drips or puddles. Refrigerant leaks are gas escaping from sealed pipework and show up as reduced cooling, icing or oily marks at joints.

Why investigate the cause before a recharge?

If the leak isn't fixed, the new refrigerant escapes too and the problem returns. Finding and repairing the leak first is the lasting fix.
