Residential Air Conditioning Installation in Melbourne

Choosing air conditioning for your home starts with the rooms you want to cool and heat. We help you compare split, multi-split and ducted systems, then quote and install the one that fits.

Overview

Air conditioning installation for your home

Airmax installs reverse-cycle air conditioning in Melbourne homes. We look at the rooms you use, the size and layout of the house and where equipment can go, then recommend a split, multi-split or ducted system and give you a written quote before any work starts.

We work across Melbourne and regional Victoria. Every job starts with a written quote.

Choosing a system for your home

Most Melbourne homes suit one of three set-ups. A split system puts one indoor unit in one room and is the simplest way to cool and heat a living area or bedroom. A multi-split runs several indoor units from one outdoor unit, which suits a few rooms where there isn't space for several outdoor units. A ducted system hides the indoor unit in the roof space and sends air to vents in each room, so the whole house is covered from one controller.

The right choice depends on how many rooms you want to condition, how you use them during the day, and whether the roof space can take a ducted unit. We talk this through on site rather than recommending one type for every home.

Sizing, room use, placement and access

Capacity is worked out from the room, not guessed from the floor area alone. We look at ceiling height, insulation, window size and which way the room faces. An undersized unit runs flat out and never catches up; an oversized one turns on and off and wastes power.

Placement matters as much as size. We check where the indoor unit will spread air evenly, where the outdoor unit can sit with clear airflow and away from bedrooms, and how the pipework, drain and power supply will reach it.

What the installation quote includes and excludes

Your written quote lists the system and its capacity, where each unit goes, the length of pipe runs and the electrical work needed. It also says what isn't included, such as wall patching, painting, or switchboard upgrades if your electrical supply needs one.

  • Equipment make, model and capacity
  • Indoor and outdoor unit positions
  • Pipework, drainage and electrical connection
  • Removal of an old unit, if you need it
  • Anything the price depends on, such as roof access

Assessment, installation, commissioning and handover

After you accept the quote we book a day that suits you. On the day our technicians mount the units, run and insulate the refrigerant pipework, fit the drain and complete the electrical connection.

Before we leave we pressure test and evacuate the pipework, run the system in cooling and heating, check airflow and drainage, and show you how to use the controller and any app or timer.

Repair or replace your existing system

If you already have air conditioning that isn't working well, it may be worth repairing before you replace it. We look at the age of the system, the cost of the fault and whether parts are still available, and tell you which option makes more sense.

If repair is the better path, see air conditioning repairs. If you're ready for new equipment, our split system installation and ducted air conditioning installation pages go into more detail.

FAQ

Common questions

More answers on our FAQ page.

Which system suits my home?

A split system suits one room or open living area. A multi-split suits a few rooms where outdoor space is limited. A ducted system suits whole-home comfort when the roof space has room for the indoor unit and ductwork. We recommend one after seeing the home, and explain why.

What affects installation cost?

The main factors are the type and capacity of the system, how far the pipework has to run between the units, roof and wall access, the electrical work needed, and whether an old system has to come out first. Your written quote lists each of these, so you can see what the price depends on.

Can the new unit go where the old one was?

Often it can, but old pipework and wiring may not suit the new system. We check them on site and say in the quote whether they can be reused or need replacing.
