Reverse-Cycle & Electric Heating Repairs in Melbourne

If your reverse-cycle system cools but won't heat, or the house never gets warm, we diagnose the heating-mode fault and explain the repair.

Overview

Heating repairs for your home

Airmax repairs reverse-cycle and electric heating systems in Melbourne homes. We diagnose heating-mode faults in split and ducted heat pumps, controls and fans, then quote the repair before doing it. We don't repair gas heaters.

We work across Melbourne and regional Victoria. Every job starts with a written quote.

Not covered on this page

No heat, uneven warmth and heating-mode faults

Heating faults show up in a few ways. The system blows cold air in heat mode. It heats for a while and then stops. Some rooms stay cold while others are warm. Or the outdoor unit ices up and doesn't clear.

  • Cold air in heating mode
  • Heating stops and starts
  • Ice on the outdoor unit that doesn't clear
  • Some rooms or zones stay cold
  • Controller not responding or showing errors

Diagnosing reverse-cycle operation and controls

A reverse-cycle system relies on a reversing valve to switch between cooling and heating, and on sensors and a defrost cycle to keep the outdoor unit working in cold weather. We check these, along with the controller settings, the fans and the refrigerant system.

Once we've found the cause, we explain it and quote the repair.

Heater, controller and fan replacement

Some faults come down to a failed part: a fan motor, sensor, controller or electric heater element. Where a compatible replacement is available, we can source and fit it. Our parts replacement page explains how we identify the right part.

What affects repair feasibility and cost

The age of the system, the availability of parts and the extent of the fault all affect whether a repair is worth doing. A sensor or fan motor is a modest repair. A failed compressor or a major refrigerant leak on an older system may cost more than the system is worth, and we'll tell you if that's the case.

After the repair

We test the system in heating mode before we leave. To keep it running well through winter, a heating service before the cold months helps catch problems early. If the system is old and repairs keep adding up, see reverse-cycle heating installation.

FAQ

Common questions

More answers on our FAQ page.

Why does my reverse-cycle system cool but not heat?

Common causes are a faulty reversing valve, a sensor or control fault, or a problem with the defrost cycle. Check that the controller is set to heat and the filters are clean. If it still won't heat, we'll diagnose it.

Can a faulty controller be replaced?

Usually, yes, if a compatible controller is available for your system. We'll confirm the right part before quoting.

Is ice on the outdoor unit normal?

Some frost in cold weather is normal, and the system defrosts itself from time to time. If ice builds up and doesn't clear, there's likely a fault that needs checking.
