Sizing a split system

A split system's capacity is measured in kilowatts. The right size depends on the room's floor area, ceiling height, insulation, windows and which way it faces: a west-facing living room with big windows needs more than a shaded bedroom of the same size. We size each room on site rather than from a chart, because an undersized unit struggles on hot days and an oversized one cycles on and off and wastes power.

Back-to-back or a longer pipe run

The simplest install is back-to-back: the indoor unit on the inside of an external wall and the outdoor unit directly behind it, with a short pipe run. When the outdoor unit has to go somewhere else, such as around a corner, away from a bedroom window or down from a second storey, the pipe run gets longer, and the quote includes the extra pipe, cover and labour.

Replacing an old unit

Replacing a split is often simpler than a new install. The wall bracket, the hole through the wall and the power supply can be reused if they suit the new unit, though the pipework is usually renewed to match its refrigerant. The old refrigerant is recovered by a licensed technician before the unit comes off the wall.

Placement, noise and neighbours

Outdoor units need clear airflow, a firm mount and room for servicing. Keep them away from bedroom windows, yours and the neighbours', and off shared fences where the hum carries. Victoria's residential noise rules limit air conditioner noise that can be heard inside a neighbour's home late at night, so placement matters on Geelong's closer-set suburban blocks.

Coastal homes

Near Corio Bay and the coast, salt air corrodes outdoor coils faster. Some manufacturers offer coil coatings or coastal-protected models; if you live close to the water, ask about them when you get quotes.

FAQ

Common questions

More answers on our FAQ page.

What size split system do I need?

As a rough guide, small bedrooms often take around 2.5 kW and larger living rooms 5 kW or more. Ceiling height, windows and insulation change that, so we size each room on site.

Can you replace my old unit on the same brackets?

Often, if the bracket is sound and suits the new unit's size and weight. We check the bracket, the wall penetration and the power supply at the quote.

How long does an installation take?

A back-to-back split system is usually installed within a day. Longer pipe runs, two-storey installs and electrical work add time; the quote includes an estimate.

Is a coastal-protected unit worth it near the water?

It's worth considering if your home is close to the bay or the coast, where salt shortens the life of standard outdoor coils. Further inland it matters less. Ask about it when we quote.

What affects the price?

The unit's capacity and model, the pipe run between the indoor and outdoor units, the wall type and access, any electrical work and removal of an old unit. Your written quote lists each part.
